With the demise of the Star Ferry Terminal in Central, now comes the fatal fate of Queens' Pier. I may not fully understand the significance of Queens' Pier apart from it having served as the port of arrival for British royalties and VIPs for the past 50 odd years. Anything lost is saddening, especially a piece of history that belongs to everyone who has lived in HK. In the name of development, building an expressway on reclaimed land to ease traffic means it has to go. Having said this, development is still essential to keep a place economically viable but I guess a more comprehensive public consultation and a mutual agreement could be met before a one-way decision on its demise. I am glad that they have chosen to preserve it somewhere else in its original form.
However, in comparison, given a choice, I thought I would prefer to preserve Star Ferry Terminal for I thought the clock tower would be of a higher historical value as compared to Queens' Pier.
In retrospect, our very own medical library will be gone come August, to make way for new development. Having served batches of the medical fraternity for the past 22 years, it is time to say good bye. Then again, I guess heritage wise, with its mosiac tiles (I hate mosiac tiles!), it does not warrant any forms of preservation. On grounds of emotional attachment, I guess there is some room for preservation. Perhaps, in the form of strutural similarity in the new library. I quite liked that staircase in the library but I do admit that I spent very little time there. Sometimes, I do wonder how the old medical library looked like when it was not in Kent Ridge and wonder how did the medical students of the past react when news broke that they had to move to Kent Ridge.
