Having played the Double Bass for years. Finally found out why it is called a Double bass today. The reason is simple. The note we actually play on the instrument is actually one octave lower than it is printed in the score.

Eg. We read C as it is in the score. But the sound is actually one octave lower.

So, it is double the bass.
