Read this somewhere I cannot remember exactly; "An incompetent doctor swells up the cemetery"
I have also read something about us entrusting all the other professions for our lives are also in their hands from yada_yada.
I disagree with the former as the quantity is flawed while partially agree to the latter.
An incompetent doctor does not swell up the cemetery at one instant, he would have been fired by the regulatory body for one mishap. So he/she does not swell, rather may contribute. Furthermore, he is under supervision from ranks high above to prevent mistakes. Plus factor there.
An incompetent bus driver on the other hand is alone and will swell up the cemetery for he carries a whole lots of passengers especially during peak hours and on double decker buses. He will not be fired too for chances are he would have been gone with the mishaps.
The same goes for incompetencies in Airline Pilots, Engineers, Cooks, Architects, Fire Fighters, Metereologists, Teachers, Cleaners and the list goes on.
Even an incompetent Government will swell up the cemetery. Think 9/11 and SARS.
Well, all other professions do play a major part in our lives and we really do entrust our lives to them, sometimes unknowingly. However, the difference is between entrusting a well and healthy life in full swing and a weak and sickly life that is on the verge of collapse. If you notice, we never entrust doctors with well and healthy lives. Do we?
If we remove the in from incompetency, we see a whole new meaning!
A Competent Doctor do really bring hope to a sickly and weak life which is really miraculous and sacred. While a competency in all other professions seek to make a well and healthy life even better.
We all play an important role in society no matter how big or small!
